What happens if you require day therapy or hospital admission

Day therapy and/or admission to hospital are generally covered by your private health fund. However, an excess or copayment may be payable, depending on your elected level of cover with your health fund. This information may be obtained from your health fund.

For Day Therapy Admissions

  • You will not be charged a gap fee for your medical care by the doctor.
  • Some treatments or chemotherapy may require single day or multi-day treatment
  • Sometimes the treatment may be delayed/discontinued if you experience complications from treatment.

For Overnight Hospital Admissions:

  • You will not be charged a gap fee for your medical care by your doctor.
  • However, investigations such as scans, pathology and some specialised medications may be charged by the service providers.
  • Occasionally your doctor may ask their colleagues to cover if they are unavailable.

If I need follow up blood tests, how long before the appointment do they need to be done?

  • If you are having treatment/chemotherapy at the next visit:
    – 1-2 days prior to your appointment.
    – Same day blood tests are available at some sites, with results available in approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
  • Some specialised tests take 3-5 days (electrophoresis for Myeloma or MGUS), or several weeks for some genetic studies. However your doctor will let you know if the blood test is needed in a special time frame.
